Easy win:
Take daily project notes

Some of the most important learning happens through personal experience. Taking quick daily notes on your current project helps you reflect on what works well and what needs improvement. In aggregate, Project Notes help you understand a project's overall shape and progression.

Task 1: Choose a note-taking application

You can start simple here, using a note-taking application you’re already using, or you can use project notes to get familiar with creating “networked notes” using bidirectional linking. For more information, see Choosing a Notes System and Bidirectional Linking 101.

Task 2: Create a note for your current project.

I use the format below, which meets my needs as a user experience consultant. Your format should be tailored to the type of project you work on.

Task 3: Each day, make a quick project note of what happened on the project that day.

Some days are “business as usual,” so I’ll just jot down what I did. Other days are more eventful, such as when leading a client workshop. In this case, I will likely have multiple notes for the day, focusing on what went well and what didn’t. These entries should be tagged with a tag or contain a bidirectional link. (Worked Well, Lessons Learned)

I create new project notes at the top of the list so that the most recent notes appear first.

Task 4: Periodically review your list of successes and lessons learned by clicking on the tag or bidirectional link.
